Abstract As is the case in many countries, university reform a perennial topic of discussion Japan and there an extensive domestic literature on this topic, ranging character from tabloid to scholarly. The purpose essay introduce some themes currently preoccupying Japanese authors at more scholarly end spectrum. reviews texts dealing with fundamental nature ‘Japanese’ universities, how they are managed, their relationship government, all view identifying ways out gridlock intractable problems unworkable solutions which, as explains, afflicts much existing literature. highlights especially contributions which lack direct parallels international Anglophone reform, encouraging readers explore further for themselves initiate greater dialogue between vernacular ‘global’ traditions.
